“It acts quickly and decisively...”

The Kill Order (Prequel to Maze Runner Series) - James Dashner

At first the man seemed surprised, like Mark had read his mind. Then a knowing grin crept across his face. “It might be the only way to get inside eh?”
“Maybe, it’s now or never.”
“Cameras and guards? It’s a big risk.”
“But they have our friends.”
Alec nodded slowly. “Spoken like a true soldier.”
“Let’s go then.”

I’ve reviewed the series before after watching the film adaptations and this is the prequel to the Maze Runner series. This is by far the best book in the series that I have read so far (1 to go and it’s on order from Amazon!). The story follows a group of people surviving the sun flares in a man-made settlement in the mountains, when they are attacked by a group in green, rubber suits and masks. The intruders shower the settlers with darts coated with the deadly, and highly contagious virus - later known as the flare. This book made me want to laugh, cry and scream. If that’s not a successful book, I don’t know what is.

As we know from the original series, the virus was set upon the people by the coalition government as a means of “population control” - they believed that after the sun flares destroyed most of the Earth, there were too many people and not enough resources to go around. They take it upon themselves to mercilessly kill thousands of innocent people - this begs the question: Do we really have the right to decide who lives and dies? The answer is of course no. Seeing the trail of destruction that the virus leaves behind after a catastrophic solar event, really drives it home that this is an entirely possible outcome of global warming - except at a much more immediate and alarming rate that I hope never to witness in my lifetime.

Mark, Trina and Alec were such heroic lead characters and they had me really rooting  for them right from the start. The chemistry between Mark and Trina makes the inevitable ending an even more bitter pill to swallow. Alec was a strong but not cheesy father figure that complimented the group’s dynamic nicely without giving them too much of an easy ride. Trina was a plucky heroine who gave as good as she got throughout. Overall, I think the characters were well thought out in this prequel and each bought enough to the table to be interesting.

I really enjoyed this, more so than the rest of the series. Definitely worth a read if you liked the original series or  if you like the apocalyptic genre (just be prepared to get the tissues ready!) 8/10.

Thanks for reading!
