"You'll be mine one day..."

Hidden Monsters (The Monsters Among Us Book 1) - Amanda Strong

"Wait, I want to tell you something first." I could no longer feel the point of the needle against my skin. "You are going to fall in love with me Samantha. It's only a matter of time. You'll be mine one day. One day you'll lie in my arms and kiss my lips." His gloved finger traced my lips.

I went into this book with a lot of hope. The premise was different: 17-year-old girl is abducted while jogging in the woods by a captor who injects her with an unknown substance and promises her she will fall in love with him. When she finally escapes, she returns home to find herself having 'weird dreams' about flying. So many directions Strong could have taken this storyline and she chose the wrong one.

*SPOILERS*
Let's start with Samantha/Sammy whatever her name is. Her naivety can be forgiven, she's 17 and clearly very inexperienced. She meets the ever-alluring Blake and, obviously, falls for him immediately. She spends half of the book desperate to kiss him, and when they finally do, she freaks out that he's going to rip her clothes off. Decide what you want love!
Then there's the whole 'multiple personality twist'. As if her storyline wasn't already grasping at straws, she throws this little chestnut in to top this book off at rock bottom. In the last 30 pages or so, her best friend Mack decides to tell her all about an alternate personality she developed as a result of her near-death drowning experience. This 'other personality' Sammy is irritable, obnoxious and emotionally dominating - sounds just like PMS to me...

Strong could have done so much more with this idea and she let it go to waste. I don't really understand the appeal of the fae concept, but I've read some good books that have sculpted the idea in a clever way. The concept of this book is dragons and damsels. That's right, our lead protagonist is a giant dragon fly. I'll just leave that there.

I'm glad this book was only cheap on the kindle or I would have been even more bummed out. 3/10

Thanks for reading!
