It's not me, it's you! - Jon Richardson
If I might submit my entry here for the award for most turgid and illogical metaphor in literature: In the giant nightclub that is the universe, the clock will sooner or later reach ten-to-two and the bouncers of time will pick us up off the ground and fling us through the doors of existence onto the pavement of history, and we will be no more missed that a tapeworm is missed by its host.
I was really looking forward to this book because I absolutely love Jon Richardson's stand up comedy and his appearances on 8 Out of 10 Cats (one of my favourite shows), however I was quite disappointed by this book. I knew from the offset that it wasn't supposed to be an autobiography but I was expecting hilarious anecdotes and stories that had me howling as much as his comedy sketches do. I'm sad to say this was not the case.
Although his compulsive tendencies and ritualistic behaviour, similar to some of my own (see page 30 for the correct way to order your DVD and book collections!) did cause me to have a little chuckle to myself, his internal dialogue about love and relationships comes across like he missed a few hugs as a child. What was promised as funny, ended up actually being quite tragic and sad. By the end I just wanted to give him a cuddle and tell him that everything will be alright!
Overall, it is worth a read if you like him as a comedian but don't expect too many laughs. 4/10
Thanks for reading!
